OUR MISSION

From fighting cancer… to stepping back on the ice.

Puck Cancer & Diabetes was founded by Paul Lonergan, a cancer survivor whose journey inspired him to give back and support others facing similar challenges. The initiative was sparked by a moment that brought together loss, resilience, and the love of hockey. After hearing Kaleb Dahlgren speak at his son’s school, Mentor College, Paul met a student named Nikolai who shared that he had stopped playing hockey after losing his father, Pavel, to brain cancer. Moved by his story - and by his own experience with cancer - Paul felt called to create something meaningful in his honour. The name Puck Cancer & Diabetes reflects the personal journeys behind the cause: cancer, which has deeply impacted many involved, and diabetes, represented by members of the hockey community such as Kaleb Dahlgren, who live with the condition and advocate for greater awareness and support. What began as an idea to honour one father’s memory has grown into a community-driven event that raises awareness, supports those affected, and brings people together through the power of hockey.
